Question: What is the best way to be a responsible and proactive adventurer?
Answer: Begin with the end in mind!
In any of life’s many situations, what is the intended outcome you wish to have happen? For as many people as there are participating in adventure activities, I am sure there are as many different answers to this question. For me, I always want a great adventure to have the following three results:
- To be completed safely.
- To have had a good time.
- To have learned something from the experience.
That's just my opinion on the matter. Do you know what your opinion is? Most people don't. Never stopped to think of it. I am sure you have one. Opinions are like... (gotcha :-) mouths everybody has one! Whether you realize it or not your opinion is there and to some people it is important.
Another thing you may have and not realize, is goals. One great way to accomplish your goals, is first to recognize that you do indeed have goals and figure out what they are, and then to order them in order of importance. We'll go over that in Habit #3 Put first things first. For now, just sit down and think about the adventure activity you are involved in.
One great exercise for this is to imagine that money is no object, you have won the lottery, and you have no other worries. What would you do? Where would you be 5 years from now.
For me the answer is simple…Standing on the beach in some tropical destination looking back at Adventurers having a great time on the grounds of my exotic resort, then turning to get on my boat for a day of diving with exotic sea creatures, my friends, and my family. Filled with the knowledge and excitement that people will be enjoying their lives more because they came to visit our humble little resort in the sun.

Take a minute and write down what you would do and where you will be....AIM HIGH!!
